Mayor Cory A. Booker’s Review of “Today’s Bride and Groom for Couples”

Crystal is truly a phenomenal woman with a phenomenal story. She embodies determination, grit, persistence and dedication all wrapped in a spirit of love and service. I am inspired by who she is and by the challenges she has had to overcome to achieve.

Crystal is an impressive businesswoman. She has established a great business, Angel Blossom Weddings, which is not only a strong contributor to the Newark community but is also a shining example to young entrepreneurs and dreamers who need practical examples of success upon which to fuel their visions.

Crystal’s business savvy, artistic skills, design expertise and organizational mastery have made her a local force in the bridal arena. Just to walk into her store is an experience.

In Crystal’s store I felt transported by the décor and design from a Newark street into the best of Manhattan wedding boutiques. Her personalized service and warmth made all those who I witnessed her encounter feel not only special but as if they were royalty.

She pays attention to every little detail and gives immediate confidence that she can make a wedding or any event she plans truly meaningful and memorable. Crystal held a tremendous lunch in my honor which made me feel appreciated, nurtured and empowered in my mission. The food, ambiance and a host of small touches made all those present feel satisfied in mind, body and soul.

Interview on the LOUIE JONES show WCFJ AM 1470

Q: Welcome to the show Crystal.

A: Well hello, good afternoon.

Q: So I think I‘m given a pretty good overview of who you are and what you do, in addition to all of that, one of the more important thing that you do is mentor the youth.

A: Yes I do.

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about that?

A: Well I have been a dance teacher for a number of years now, and I have latched onto the young people. I don‘t have any children of my own, so I go into school systems and I teach and all forms of dance, I teach African dance, Modern dance, and ballroom dancing, but I also mentor to the children because a lot of them come from not bad homes, but broken homes and they have a lot of issues. A lot of times, through dance that‘s communication right there. You break down a lot of barriers, by just dancing with these children. Then you talk, and you learn more about them, and that they want to pursue their dreams.

Q: And you know, there is so much negativity focused on our youth today, and you work with them closely, what is it that you see in the youth that lets you know that they aren‘t going to give up their future and let it be determined by the naysayer‘s of today?

A: Well I see, in my kids, a lot of discouragement, a lot of them want everything quick and in a hurry, they look at TV and they watch videos, and they think it‘s quick but it‘s not. I teach them the process of getting to that point. There is a process- auditions, classes, dancers take classes, singers take coaching, actors take coaching lessons, even professional actors who have been on the screen for years, they have coaches. Every time you need a touch up, you go to a class, you go to your vocal session, you go to your dance class to maintain, but they don‘t see that process. I try to teach them about auditions, and how to prepare themselves, I try to get dancewear to them, because a lot of them can‘t afford dancewear. Once they find all of that out, and I teach them in a fun and loving way in the classroom, then they get it.

Q: Now in an audition, and that actually led into my next discussion smoothly, in an audition, there are certain tools that you need: dancewear, physical and mental tools, can you take that and just discuss how in life there are certain tools needed for success also, that you relay to your children.

A: It falls down to simple things, when you come to a dance class you have to be prepared to dance. —What does that mean Ms. Crystal?“, that means no jeans. That‘s the number one problem with kids, they want to dance in tight jeans. —Well they have lycra in them, they stretch Ms. Crystal“, but you can‘t go to an audition (well you can), but you have to dress the part within life and reality. To apply for a job, you have to have an education, you have to have a resume together, with acting you have to have a headshot with a resume on the back. Or if you don‘t have that, you have to have a cover letter, so in different scenarios I teach them the tools that they need. If you want to be a model, you need a portfolio or a comp card, and if you want to work in the business world, you have to have a resume and a cover letter. And those are the tools that you need, and to get those tools, you need to get a good education.

Q: And you have to be able to face rejection, time after time.

A: Absolutely

Q: And when you hear the phrase, —never give up“, what does that mean to you? And again, how does that translate to the kids?

A: A lot of times, I see the kids give up because they didn‘t get an A on a test, you know, they got a C, or they couldn‘t get the step right in the class. It‘s a learning process, and you have to hang in there, you can‘t give up, if you want it bad enough, you have to work for it. You have to achieve that, you have to constantly say to yourself —okay, is this what I want, so I know that from 5: 30 to 6:30 I have dance class, what do I have to do to prepare for that? Okay, I‘m having trouble with this step, I‘m having trouble with the warm up, you have to talk to your teacher. I‘m having trouble with —a, b and c“ and they will help you get though that. And that will take you into anything in life.

Q: And Crystal, one thing I would like to get across to you, not everybody is a star, that doesn‘t mean that we should tone down their aspiration to be something, but it‘s also the journey and going through it, and I have met so many talented people that have touched me in so many ways, who may never be the star, but they have been the star in different ways, and have shined so brightly. Do you communicate that to kids without discouraging them? Because I think that we all want that prize, but that may not be the path.

A: Right, absolutely. I don‘t want to discourage anyone, I want them to find something that they love, a hobby, if you like photography, or if you like to draw or to paint, you know, you can still do that and still become a lawyer. I have had kids who wanted to dance, and they wanted to become a lawyer, I say —you can do both“, there is a time and a place for everything, and the key is to plan.
